Workshop: How to Help Teach Reading

Who: All community members are welcome – you don’t need to commit to volunteer to attend this free workshop

What: Learn how to teach reading and how to be a volunteer tutor with Reader’s Way

When: Friday October 21, 2022 from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM (includes soup, bread, and salad dinner)

Where: St. Andrew’s Church (200 4 Ave W, Prince Rupert, BC) (downstairs – come down the ramp to lower floor)

Reader’s Way will start tutoring in January 2023. Learn how to help children learn to read as a volunteer mentor. This workshop will introduce potential volunteers to the program and share ways to support reading. Everyone is welcome – even if you are not committed to volunteering as a mentor.

About

Reader’s Way Tutoring helps children learn to read. We motivate children with games and other fun learning activities. We teach phonics to build skills and confidence. Our students learn to read with success and fluency.

Students are provided with a mix of one-on-one and small group tutoring. Our tutors are certified teachers. Mentors provide additional help and are specially trained and supervised by certified teachers. Tom Kertes is the volunteer executive director and lead tutor. He has over 15 years of experience teaching reading. 

Tom is a certified teacher and an early childhood educator. He has taught Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1. He was an Instructor at Seneca College in Early Childhood Education in Toronto. Tom also was Policy Advisor to Ontario’s self-regulatory College of Early Childhood Educators. He was also an early childhood educator at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
